The Man Who Can Stand Up

Chapter 5 - No More Tests

Emma did not return to Adrian's mansion.

Not immediately.

They started again.

Slowly.

Coffee.

Dinner.

Walks.

No uniforms.

No salaries.

No employer and employee.

Adrian learned to ask instead of assume.

Emma learned she could say no without fearing consequences.

Months passed.

Julian was convicted on charges connected to sabotage, fraud, and conspiracy.

Vanessa accepted a plea deal after cooperating with investigators.

Cole Industries survived the attempted takeover.

Adrian returned publicly to work on foot.

The first photograph of him standing caused headlines everywhere.

He hated them.

Emma laughed.

"You spent months pretending you couldn't walk. You can't complain now that people are interested."

"I can complain."

"You can."

She smiled.

"I just don't have to listen."

One year after the gala, the same charity held another dinner.

Adrian almost declined.

Emma encouraged him to go.

This time they entered together.

Not as master and maid.

Not as rescuer and victim.

As equals.

The ballroom looked almost identical.

Same chandeliers.

Same marble floor.

Same guests whispering behind champagne glasses.

Adrian saw the place where the wheelchair had been.

Emma noticed.

"Bad memory?"

"Useful one."

"Why?"

He looked at her.

"Because I thought standing up would prove I wasn't weak."

Emma waited.

"But the hardest thing I did that night came afterward."

"What?"

"Admitting I was wrong."

She smiled.

Later, a waiter passed with champagne.

Emma took two glasses.

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"Careful."

She handed him one.

"I promise not to pour it on you."

"Very reassuring."

They laughed.

Then Adrian reached into his jacket.

Emma immediately narrowed her eyes.

"If that's some dramatic test—"

"No."

He pulled out a small velvet box.

Her expression changed.

Adrian opened it.

A ring.

But he did not kneel immediately.

He looked at her first.

"I'm not asking because you stayed when I was pretending to be broken."

Emma's eyes filled.

"I'm asking because you left when I deserved it."

She laughed through tears.

"And came back because you changed."

Adrian nodded.

"Will you marry me?"

Emma looked around the ballroom.

Then back at him.

"One condition."

"Anything."

"No tests."

Adrian smiled.

"Never again."

She held out her hand.

"Then yes."

Months later, Emma kept one thing from that first gala.

The stained piece of the plaid blanket.

Adrian discovered it inside a memory box.

"You kept this?"

She shrugged.

"Apparently."

"Why?"

"Because it's funny now."

He stared at her.

"Someone poured champagne over me while I was pretending to be paralyzed."

"Exactly."

"That's funny?"

Emma kissed his cheek.

"The funny part is you thought standing up was the biggest surprise."

Adrian smiled.

She was right.

The real surprise had been much simpler.

He spent months testing whether Emma loved him.

In the end, the only person who needed to prove anything was him.
