The Man Who Can Stand Up

Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Stayed

Vanessa and Julian were arrested within days.

Julian tried to blame everything on Vanessa.

Vanessa blamed him.

The mechanic confessed.

Julian had paid him to sabotage the brakes.

Vanessa had known Adrian was being targeted but said nothing because she expected to benefit financially.

The conspiracy collapsed quickly.

Julian also planned to manipulate the board while Adrian appeared permanently disabled.

His relationship with Vanessa had been partly personal.

Mostly strategic.

That devastated her more than the arrest.

She had believed she left Adrian for a stronger man.

Instead, Julian had used her exactly as she had used Adrian.

At the preliminary hearing, Vanessa asked to speak to Adrian privately.

He refused.

Then she sent a letter.

I was angry with you before the accident. I told myself you deserved to lose control. I never thought it would go this far.

Adrian never answered.

Some apologies arrive too late to repair anything.

But his greatest problem was not Vanessa.

It was Emma.

Three weeks passed.

She found work at a private rehabilitation center.

Adrian learned about it through Marcus.

He almost drove there immediately.

Then stopped.

For once, he refused to turn another person's life into something he controlled.

Instead, he wrote one letter.

No gifts.

No money.

No explanation.

Only an apology.

You protected me when you believed I had nothing. I repaid that by making your feelings prove themselves. You were right to leave.

Emma did not answer for two weeks.

Then Adrian received a message.

Coffee. One hour. Public place.

He arrived twenty minutes early.

Emma arrived exactly on time.

He stood when she approached.

"You don't have to do that."

"I know."

They sat.

For a moment neither spoke.

Finally Emma asked:

"Why did you really test me?"

Adrian answered honestly.

"Because I was falling in love with you."

She looked at him.

"And that scared you."

"More than I want to admit."

"Why?"

"Because Vanessa loved me until loving me became inconvenient."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

Adrian frowned.

"She didn't."

He understood.

Emma continued.

"You keep treating betrayal like proof that love is dangerous."

She leaned forward.

"Sometimes betrayal only proves that one person betrayed you."

Adrian absorbed that.

Then he said:

"I love you."

Emma's expression softened.

But she did not smile.

"That's not enough."

"I know."

"You don't get me back because you finally said the right thing."

"I know."

"Then what do you want?"

Adrian took a breath.

"A chance to become someone who doesn't need tests."

For the first time, Emma smiled slightly.

"That's better."
