The Man Who Can Stand Up

Chapter 3 - What Vanessa Knew

Marcus replayed the audio three times.

Vanessa's answer was even worse.

"You said the damage would be permanent."

Adrian stared at the screen.

Julian glanced around the ballroom before responding.

"It should have been."

That was enough to reopen the investigation.

Police quietly traced Julian's finances.

A mechanic connected to Adrian's private garage had received fifty thousand dollars shortly before the crash.

The payment came through a shell company.

The shell company was controlled by Julian.

But Vanessa's name appeared on something else.

A life insurance policy.

Three months before the accident, she had increased Adrian's coverage dramatically.

She was the primary beneficiary.

Adrian felt sick.

He confronted neither of them.

Not yet.

Instead, investigators searched Julian's office.

They found encrypted files.

Company takeover plans.

Projected stock values after Adrian's death.

Draft board resolutions.

And emails between Julian and Vanessa.

At first, Vanessa had only wanted a divorce.

Julian wanted more.

He convinced her that if Adrian died, she would inherit enough voting shares to help Julian seize control of Cole Industries.

But Vanessa became nervous.

She did not want murder.

The emails showed repeated arguments.

Then came the accident.

Vanessa claimed Julian told her it would only frighten Adrian.

Make him dependent.

Weak.

Easier to remove.

Adrian wanted to believe that.

Until Marcus found another message.

Vanessa had written:

If he survives, make sure he never walks again.

Adrian read it once.

Then a second time.

His ex-wife had known.

Maybe she did not cut the brake line.

But she had accepted what came after.

He thought about the champagne.

The laughter.

The way she dropped the wet blanket at his feet.

Not cruelty created in one night.

Cruelty revealed.

Then Emma appeared at the library door.

She had come to collect her resignation papers.

Adrian closed the laptop.

"You're leaving."

"Yes."

"Because I lied?"

"Because you made me part of something without my consent."

He looked down.

She noticed.

"What's wrong?"

Adrian hesitated.

Then pushed the laptop toward her.

Emma read the messages.

Her face changed.

"She knew?"

"Yes."

"About the accident?"

"Enough."

Emma sat down slowly.

Adrian expected sympathy.

Instead she asked:

"Have you called the police?"

"They're already involved."

"Good."

Then she stood again.

"I'm still leaving."

Adrian looked surprised.

Emma gave him a sad smile.

"Someone else betraying you doesn't erase what you did to me."

She walked away.

And Adrian realized losing Emma hurt more than proving Vanessa guilty.
