The Man Who Can Stand Up
Chapter 2 - The Accident That Wasn't Random
Six months earlier, Adrian's car had gone through a barrier on a mountain road.
He survived with fractures and temporary nerve damage.
Doctors originally warned he might never walk normally again.
Vanessa lasted eleven days.
Then she disappeared.
Two weeks later, Adrian learned she had moved in with Julian Mercer, one of his company's senior executives.
Vanessa claimed the marriage had already been dead.
Adrian believed her.
What he did not know was that police had found something unusual in the wreckage.
The brake line had been cut.
Someone wanted the crash.
Adrian told almost no one.
His security chief, Marcus, suggested keeping his recovery secret.
"If whoever did this believes you're permanently disabled, they'll think they succeeded."
Adrian agreed.
The wheelchair became camouflage.
Then strange things began happening.
Confidential documents vanished.
Board members quietly discussed forcing Adrian to resign.
Julian began buying company shares through intermediaries.
Vanessa filed for a large settlement, claiming Adrian was incapable of managing his finances.
Piece by piece, Adrian realized the accident might have been part of something bigger.
Still, one question haunted him.
Who around him was real?
His wife left.
Executives stopped visiting.
Friends disappeared.
Emma stayed.
She helped him into cars.
Brought food when he refused to eat.
Sat outside his study when nightmares woke him.
She never asked about his will.
Never asked how much money he still had.
That should have been enough.
But betrayal had made Adrian suspicious of everyone.
So he created the gala test.
Vanessa and Julian had been invited intentionally.
Marcus arranged for hidden cameras.
Adrian wanted to see whether they would reveal anything when they believed him helpless.
He also wanted to know what Emma would do.
That part had not been necessary.
He understood it now.
After the gala, Emma found him alone in the library.
"You tested me."
Adrian turned.
"I needed to know."
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"You wanted to know."
He said nothing.
Emma continued.
"There is a difference."
"I trusted the wrong people before."
"So you decided nobody deserved trust until they proved themselves."
Adrian looked at her.
Emma's eyes were wet.
"I meant what I said out there."
He stepped closer.
"I know."
"No. You don't."
She backed away.
"Because if you knew, you wouldn't have needed the test."
Then she walked out.
Adrian remained alone.
But the hidden cameras had recorded something else.
Something far more important than Emma's loyalty.
Julian whispering to Vanessa:
"He wasn't supposed to recover."
