The Boy Who Shined a Stranger's Shoes in the Rain

CHAPTER 4 - THE NAME ON THE FORM

The legal guardian listed on Mateo's records was a man named Rafael Soto.

Daniel read the form twice. "Who is he?"

Mateo's shoulders tightened. Elena looked away.

For one ugly second, Daniel felt the old poison rise. Not anger that she had lived without him. She had every right. It was the fear of being too late again, of finding out he had missed not only her life but his son's as well.

"Rafael married my sister," Elena said at last. "After she died, he helped us. For a while."

Mateo said nothing, but his mouth went flat.

Elena took a careful breath. "When I got sick, I let him sign school forms. Emergency forms. I was working nights. I needed help. Then he started asking for rent money. More money. He said if I didn't keep up, he'd take Mateo to his cousin in Newark and tell the court I was unfit."

Daniel went still.

"He isn't his father?" he asked.

"No."

Mateo looked at Daniel then, really looked at him. "Are you?"

The room held that question like a held breath.

Daniel could have said yes with confidence. The years, the face, the timing all pointed there. But he had lost too much already to begin with another lie.

"I believe I am," he said. "But we can prove it."

That answer seemed to matter to the boy.

Elena touched the old photo still resting beside the letters. "I kept one picture too," she said. "Not because I trusted you. Because I couldn't make myself erase what was real."

Daniel stepped into the hallway and began making calls. Not to lawyers. Not to assistants. To the hospital's patient advocate. To a cardiologist he knew from a fundraising board. To a social worker. He asked what could be done lawfully, immediately, and in the child's best interest.

By midnight, he had enough to act.

But when he returned to Room 614, the bed was empty.

Elena's blanket lay folded back.

Mateo's faded shoe cloth was gone from the chair.

A nurse hurried toward him. "Her brother-in-law checked her out against advice," she said. "Said he was taking mother and child home."

Then she handed Daniel a scrap of paper Mateo had left behind.

On it, in crooked pencil, was an address in the Bronx.

And underneath it, one line:

If you're really my dad, come before he does.
