The Boy Who Shined a Stranger's Shoes in the Rain

CHAPTER 1 - THE PHOTO ON THE SIDEWALK

"Sir, please... just one dollar."

The boy came out of nowhere.

One second Daniel Mercer was stepping from the back of a black SUV onto a wet Manhattan sidewalk, thinking about the dinner he was already late for. The next, a small body slid to a stop in front of him, knees nearly hitting the pavement.

The boy couldn't have been older than eight.

Daniel almost told him to stop.

Then he saw the boy's hands.

Red from cold. Knuckles chapped. Fingernails rimmed with dirt.

He saw the oversized coat hanging off narrow shoulders. The shoes with split soles. The way the boy kept his head down, as if looking up might get him chased away.

"You're too young to be working," Daniel said, his voice softer than he intended. "Where are your parents?"

The brush slowed.

"My dad left when I was little."

The boy swallowed hard and kept rubbing.

"My mom is really sick."

Something in Daniel's chest tightened. He reached into his inner pocket for his wallet. He barely noticed the old photo slipping free until it fluttered down and landed faceup on the wet pavement.

The boy froze.

He bent, picked it up carefully, and stared at the woman in the picture. His finger touched her face with shocking tenderness, like someone touching a wound.

Then he looked up.

His eyes were wide now. Not pleading. Searching.

"Sir," he whispered, "why do you have a picture of my mom?"

Daniel took the photo back with trembling fingers.

He looked at the boy's face. The eyes. The mouth. The shape of the jaw.

And everything inside him stopped.

"That was my wife..."

The words came out broken.

At that exact moment, the boy pulled a folded hospital paper from his coat pocket and held it up.

At the top, in smudged blue ink, Daniel read the patient's name: Elena Alvarez Mercer.
