The Heart She Recognized
Chapter 3 - What Michael Stole
Michael Harper was now president of the family company.
A position once meant for Laura.
Before she disappeared, Laura had worked beside Evelyn for five years.
She was supposed to inherit voting control equally with Michael.
Then she left.
With Laura gone, Michael inherited everything.
Evelyn had never questioned the timing.
Until now.
She returned home and opened the locked cabinet containing documents from seven years earlier.
Several files were missing.
Her former secretary, Helen, still lived nearby.
Evelyn called her.
Helen went silent when she mentioned Laura.
"What do you know?"
"Evelyn..."
"Tell me."
Helen finally confessed.
After Laura disappeared, letters arrived.
Dozens.
Michael collected them.
He told Helen his mother didn't want to see them.
"I believed him."
Evelyn felt sick.
"Where are they?"
"I don't know."
But Helen remembered one thing.
Laura had once come personally to the house.
Pregnant.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
"When?"
"About six months after she left."
"I was home."
"I know."
Evelyn's voice cracked.
"Why didn't I see her?"
"Michael met her outside."
Helen had watched from an upstairs window.
Michael spoke to Laura for several minutes.
Then handed her an envelope.
Laura left crying.
The fifty-thousand-dollar check.
Evelyn understood.
Michael had forged the letter.
He convinced Laura that her own mother had paid her to disappear.
But why?
The inheritance explained part of it.
Not all.
Evelyn searched Michael's old office that evening.
Behind a row of accounting books, she found a small locked box.
Inside were Laura's letters.
Never opened.
One began:
Mom, Daniel says Michael is moving money from the company. I need to show you what we found.
Evelyn's hands began trembling.
Another:
Please stop sending Michael. I don't want money. I only want to talk to you.
Another:
I'm pregnant. I wish you could know your granddaughter.
Evelyn sat down.
Seven birthdays.
Seven Christmases.
Seven years stolen because Michael wasn't only protecting his inheritance.
He was hiding fraud.
Laura and Daniel had discovered that he was siphoning money through shell companies.
When Laura threatened to tell Evelyn, Michael used their family argument to separate them.
Then Evelyn found the final letter.
It was dated two months after Mia's birth.
Daniel is dead. Michael knows where we are. I'm scared.
Evelyn's blood ran cold.
Daniel Bennett had supposedly died in a highway accident.
Suddenly that accident no longer felt accidental.
