The Heart She Recognized

Chapter 1 - The Other Half
Evelyn Harper was almost at the station exit when the necklace slipped from her coat pocket.
She never noticed.
Seven-year-old Mia did.
"Ma'am! You dropped something!"
A traveler pulling two suitcases passed between them, swallowing the girl's voice beneath the noise of wheels and footsteps.
Evelyn continued walking.
Mia crouched and picked up the silver chain.
Then she stopped.
At its end was half of a small heart.
She stared at it.
Slowly, she reached beneath the collar of her burgundy coat and pulled out the necklace she had worn for as long as she could remember.
Another half.
Mia brought them together.
Click.
The tiny magnets connected.
A complete silver heart rested against her palm.
Her eyes widened.
She ran after the older woman.
"Look! They fit."
Evelyn turned.
Her expression changed the instant she saw the pendant.
The handle of her suitcase slipped from her hand.
Seven years earlier, Evelyn had bought those two pieces for herself and her only daughter, Laura.
One half for each of them.
After a terrible argument, Laura disappeared.
Evelyn had spent years believing her daughter wanted nothing more to do with her.
But Laura had taken her half of the heart.
And now it hung around the neck of a little girl Evelyn had never seen.
Evelyn bent slowly.
"Who gave you the other half?"
Mia instinctively closed her fingers around the necklace.
"My mom."
Evelyn's breath caught.
"What's her name?"
The girl hesitated.
"Laura."
The station seemed to go silent.
Evelyn's eyes filled immediately.
"Laura Harper?"
Mia frowned.
"No. Laura Bennett."
The hope on Evelyn's face faltered.
Then Mia added:
"She used to be Harper."
Evelyn gripped the edge of a nearby bench.
"Where is she?"
Mia's expression changed.
"At the hospital."
Evelyn's heart began pounding.
"Is she sick?"
The girl nodded.
"She says she's dying."
Evelyn looked down at the complete silver heart.
Seven years without her daughter.
And suddenly she was terrified that she had found her too late.
