The Mother He Kept Away

Chapter 4 - The Message Lucas Left

Margaret denied everything.

Until Ethan mentioned the recording.

Then she stopped.

"What recording?"

He noticed the fear immediately.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Ethan stepped closer.

"Lucas recorded you."

Margaret looked away.

That reaction was enough.

Police reopened the investigation.

Lucas's old cloud account still existed.

His phone had automatically uploaded voice files before the crash.

One recording changed everything.

Lucas's voice came first.

"I'm telling Ethan."

Then Margaret:

"You'll destroy him."

"No. You already did."

"I saved you."

"You stole from him."

"I paid your debts!"

"You made Claire look guilty."

Ethan stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

Lucas accused Margaret of transferring the money through accounts connected to Claire's work credentials.

Margaret admitted it.

She claimed she intended to replace everything before Ethan noticed.

Then Lucas said something that made Ethan close his eyes.

"Claire's the only one who tried to help me without lying."

The final recording had been made in the car.

Lucas sounded emotional.

"I told Claire everything. If something happens tonight, she didn't do this."

Minutes later, he crashed.

There had been no murder.

No confrontation with Claire.

No theft.

Just a grieving mother who panicked after losing one son and decided she could not lose the other.

Margaret framed Claire because she believed Ethan would choose his wife over his mother.

After Lucas died, Margaret's fear became desperation.

She paid people to drive Claire out of the city.

She intercepted letters.

Blocked phone numbers.

Convinced Ethan that Claire had abandoned Noah.

The family attorney eventually confessed.

Ethan sat across from his mother in the same living room where she once comforted him.

"Why?"

Margaret cried.

"I had already lost Lucas."

"So you took Noah's mother too?"

"I thought Claire would turn you against me."

"You turned me against her."

"I was scared."

Ethan's voice broke.

"So was she."

Margaret covered her face.

Ethan stood.

"There was one thing you couldn't fake."

She looked up.

"What?"

"The way Noah ran to her."

He left.

For the first time in three years, Ethan understood the worst part.

Claire had not abandoned their family.

He had abandoned her.

Because he believed everyone except the person he once promised to trust most.
