The Mother He Kept Away

The Mother He Kept Away

Chapter 1 - The Woman He Hated

Noah's hand suddenly slipped from Ethan's.

"Dad, look! Mom!"

Ethan stopped.

Across the sidewalk, a woman sat against the wall of an old building.

Her hair was tangled. Dirt marked her cheek. An oversized coat was wrapped around her thin body.

Ethan recognized her immediately.

Claire.

His wife.

The woman he had spent three years teaching himself to hate.

"No, stop, son. Your mom is gone. She's not coming back."

Noah stared at him.

Then he pulled free.

"Mom!"

Ethan reached for him too late.

"Mom! I finally found you!"

Claire lifted her head.

For one second, she looked confused.

Then she saw Noah.

Her entire face collapsed.

"My baby!"

Claire held him so tightly that her fingers trembled against the back of his blue hoodie.

Ethan felt something tear open inside his chest.

He had imagined this moment before.

Not like this.

In his imagination, Claire would be dressed beautifully, living comfortably somewhere else, proving that abandoning them had been a choice.

Instead, she was sitting on the street.

Thin.

Dirty.

Broken.

Ethan rushed forward and grabbed Noah's arm.

"Please, stay away from her."

Noah cried out.

"Dad!"

Claire looked up.

"Please."

"Let him go."

"I only want—"

"You lost the right to want anything from him."

Her face tightened as though he had struck her.

Noah looked between them.

"Why are you mad at Mommy?"

Ethan could not answer that in front of him.

Claire lowered her eyes.

"Just one time."

Ethan stared at her.

"One time?"

"Let me hold him once."

Something about those words made him angrier.

"You already made your choice."

Claire looked up sharply.

"No. You made it for me."

Ethan froze.

She reached beneath her coat and pulled out something wrapped in cloth.

A small silver key.

Ethan knew it.

It had belonged to the safe in their old bedroom.

The same safe police said Claire had emptied three years ago.

The same night half a million dollars disappeared.

The same night she vanished.

Claire placed the key in his hand.

"I never opened it."

Ethan stared at her.

Claire's voice dropped.

"And I never took your money."

His jaw tightened.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

Her eyes filled.

"But if you're still keeping Noah from me because of what happened that night..."

She looked at their son.

"...then at least find out what really happened."

Ethan looked down at the key.

For three years, he had believed Claire stole from his family and abandoned her child.

For the first time, he wondered whether one of those things had ever been true.
