The Boy Who Tried to Steal Her Bag Carried Her Sister's Necklace

CHAPTER 1 - THE BOY IN THE STREET
"Hey! Let go of my bag!"
Eleanor Whitmore heard her own voice ring too sharply across the evening street.
The boy came out of nowhere.
He was small, maybe six. Thin. His coat was too big, his shoes split at the sides. He grabbed the handle of her handbag with both hands and yanked so hard she nearly stumbled.
For one shocked second, Eleanor thought only of danger.
She pulled the bag back to her chest. "Let go!"
But the child did not run.
He clung harder, eyes red and wet, desperate in a way that didn't match theft.
"Please," he cried. "Just listen to me!"
Before Eleanor could answer, a police officer rushed in from behind and caught the boy by the collar.
"Step away from her!"
The child twisted, gasping, still looking only at Eleanor. Then he shoved one hand into his shirt and dragged out a pendant on a red cord.
The purple stone flashed in the sunset.
Everything inside Eleanor went still.
Her fingers flew to the necklace at her own throat. Same oval shape. Same deep violet color. Same tiny silver star worked into the setting.
The stone had belonged to her younger sister, Clara.
Clara, who had vanished twenty-two years ago.
"My mom said you'd recognize this necklace," the boy said, voice breaking.
Eleanor stared at him.
"Where did you get that?"
He cupped the pendant protectively. "My mom gave it to me."
The officer loosened his grip, confused now. Eleanor stepped closer, hardly breathing.
"Is your mom still alive?"
The boy sniffed and nodded.
Eleanor dropped to her knees in the middle of the street and seized his cold little hand.
"Take me to her... please."
But before the boy could answer, the officer looked from one purple stone to the other and said, "Ma'am, you need to know something. This child was asking for you by name."
