Two Girls, One Face, and the Name He Buried for Seven Years

CHAPTER 3 - THE FLOWERS NO ONE PICKED UP

"Ruby wasn't buying flowers. She was saving them."

Melanie lived in a narrow brick building over an old laundromat on Lexington.

When Daniel arrived, Ruby opened the door before he could knock twice. Up close, she looked even more like Emma, though thinner, sharper around the mouth, older in ways children should not be.

"I left my bag," she said.

Daniel handed it to her. "My daughter found it."

Ruby took out the jar of coins and held it against her chest. "Good."

Melanie appeared behind her. "Ruby, honey, go start your homework."

Ruby didn't argue. She disappeared into a tiny back room.

Melanie motioned Daniel inside. The apartment was clean but worn. A couch with a mended arm. A table with three mismatched chairs. On the counter sat a grocery bouquet, wilted and browning at the edges.

"The flowers are for Laura," Melanie said quietly, following his eyes. "Ruby brings fresh ones when she can."

Daniel's anger stumbled.

"Start talking."

Melanie sat down but didn't ask him to. "Laura did survive the birth. Barely. The baby too. For a little while, everything seemed possible." Her voice broke, then steadied. "Then Laura got sick. Fast. Infection. By the time you came, she was unconscious again."

Daniel gripped the back of a chair.

"I was twenty-four," Melanie said. "Scared. Drowning in bills. Laura had already told me she'd changed her mind about you."

"That's a lie."

"Yes," Melanie said. "It was. But she was feverish, angry, and afraid. She thought you chose work over her. She didn't know about the highway crash."

Daniel shut his eyes.

"After Laura died, I told myself I was protecting Ruby. You were building your career in another city. I had nothing, but I had her. Then the lie got older every year."

"Why keep Carter?"

Melanie looked toward Ruby's room. "Because Laura wrote it on the birth form before she lost consciousness."

Daniel sat at last.

Everything in him wanted to stand up and shout. To demand court orders, explanations, punishment.

Instead he asked, "Does Ruby know?"

"She knows I'm not her mother. She knows her mother died. She doesn't know I lied to you."

From the back room, Ruby called out, "Aunt Mel, where's the hospital picture?"

Melanie froze.

Daniel turned.

Ruby walked back carrying a bent photo frame.

In the faded picture, Laura lay in bed, exhausted and smiling faintly.

And in her arms were two newborn babies.
