The Girl at Her Father's Party

Chapter 5 - Her Piece Of Cake

The DNA test came back four days later.

99.99 percent.

Adrian read the result alone.

Then he sat in his car and cried.

Not because he had suddenly become a father.

He had been one for six years.

He simply hadn't known.

Claire remained hospitalized for nearly three weeks.

Her illness was serious but treatable.

Years of unstable housing and delayed medical care had made everything worse.

Adrian offered to pay for all treatment.

Claire accepted only after he made one thing clear.

It came with no conditions.

No custody demand.

No expectation that she would move into his house.

No request for forgiveness.

Lily visited him carefully.

At first, she called him Mr. Vale.

He never corrected her.

One afternoon she asked:

"Did you really not know about me?"

Adrian looked at her.

"No."

"Mom said she wrote you."

"She did."

"Then why didn't you answer?"

He could have blamed Vanessa.

His father.

The staff.

The intercepted mail.

Instead, he gave her the harder truth.

"Because when your mom disappeared, I believed the worst thing people told me about her."

Lily frowned.

"Did you ask her?"

"No."

"Why?"

Adrian looked down.

"Because I was hurt."

Lily thought about that.

"That's not very smart."

He laughed through tears.

"No."

"It wasn't."

Vanessa was charged with fraud, identity theft, obstruction, and other crimes connected to the false transfers.

The investigation also exposed Richard Vale's misuse of foundation money.

Adrian publicly acknowledged it.

He returned the missing funds from the family estate.

Then he placed the foundation under independent oversight.

Claire's name was cleared.

But that did not restore seven years.

Adrian understood that.

So he stopped trying to replace them.

He concentrated on what came next.

Six months later, Claire and Lily attended another garden dinner at the mansion.

Smaller this time.

No enormous guest list.

No photographers.

No Vanessa.

Lily stood in front of the dessert table.

Adrian approached carrying a plate.

"You want cake?"

She looked at him suspiciously.

"How big?"

"As big as you want."

She smiled.

Then pointed toward the largest slice.

"That one."

"Obviously."

He handed it to her.

Lily took one bite.

Then looked across the garden.

Claire was sitting beneath the lights.

Healthy again.

Watching them.

"Mr. Vale?"

Adrian smiled.

"Still Mr. Vale?"

Lily shrugged.

"I'm thinking about it."

"Take your time."

She ate another bite.

Then suddenly held the fork toward him.

"Want some, Dad?"

Adrian stopped.

Lily froze too.

For a second, neither moved.

Then she became embarrassed.

"I didn't mean—"

Adrian crouched.

"You can mean it whenever you're ready."

Lily looked at him.

Then pushed the cake toward him.

"Just eat."

He laughed.

"Okay."

Across the garden, Claire covered her mouth.

Adrian saw the tears in her eyes.

He did not interpret them as forgiveness.

That would have been too easy.

But when Claire walked over later, she sat beside him.

For a while, neither spoke.

Finally Adrian said:

"I thought you destroyed my family."

Claire looked toward Lily.

"So did I."

He frowned.

"What?"

"I thought you chose your family over us."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

"We were both wrong."

"No."

Claire shook her head.

"We were both lied to."

That distinction mattered.

Lily returned carrying another plate.

She placed it between them.

"There's one piece left."

Adrian looked at Claire.

Claire looked at him.

Lily sighed dramatically.

"You can share."

Adrian smiled.

"Can we?"

Claire considered him.

Then took the first bite.

"One piece."

It wasn't a promise.

It wasn't reconciliation.

But it was a beginning.

And this time, nobody else got to decide what happened next.
