The Nanny Said, "Check Your Security Cameras"
CHAPTER 4 - EMILY'S CHOICE
Grant watched the hidden recording on Emily's phone at the kitchen table.
This video had sound.
No polished hallway. No distant angle. Just the playroom from the top shelf, pointed toward the rug where Theo and Noah built towers and waited for adults to be kind.
Sabrina entered the frame carrying a tablet and a smile that vanished the moment she shut the door.
"Sit down," she snapped.
The boys obeyed too slowly for her liking.
Noah reached for the framed drawing near the lamp, the one he and Theo had made for their father the week before. Four stick figures under a blue roof. Their mother still included, floating as memory does in the minds of children. Emily remembered Sabrina calling it morbid.
On the recording, Sabrina snatched the drawing and tore it clean across the middle.
Theo screamed.
Emily heard herself on the video then, knocking from outside after hearing the crying. The door opened. Sabrina turned with perfect calm and said, "They're upset because Emily promised them treats and forgot."
Grant shut his eyes.
But the recording wasn't finished.
Sabrina leaned down until her face filled the screen.
"If you tell your father," she said softly, "Emily will leave, and it will be your fault."
Theo's sob on the recording was unbearable.
The kitchen was silent when the video ended.
Emily folded her hands to stop them shaking. "I kept recording because I needed proof. Then tonight she saw me take the camera down from the shelf. That's why she said I was stealing."
Grant looked wrecked. Not dramatic. Not angry. Just broken open in a quieter, older way.
"I should have seen it," he said.
Emily almost said yes.
Instead, she looked toward the boys in the breakfast nook, where the housekeeper sat with them and a plate of untouched apple slices. "You were grieving," she said. "But grief doesn't make this smaller."
Sabrina stood when Grant told her to pack and leave. Her voice turned cold again.
"Fine. But if she stays, people will ask why your sons trust the nanny more than their own father."
Grant did not answer.
Emily did.
"Because trust goes where safety lives."
An hour later, with Sabrina gone, Grant came to the front hall where Emily stood beside her old canvas bag and the waiting SUV.
"I understand if you never come back," he said.
Theo's voice drifted from the stairs, small and terrified.
"Emily... are you leaving tonight?"
